SECTION 1

RIPARIAN
FOREST

A riparian forest or riparian woodland is a forested or wooded area of land
adjacent to a body of water such as a river, stream, pond, lake, marshland,
estuary, canal, sink, or reservoir. Due to the broad nature of the definition,
riparian woodlands have a huge diversity of characteristics including but not
limited to soil composition, microclimates, and vegetative structures. However,
among the varied range and landscapes, one factor stays constant: a high rate
of primary productivity. This makes riparian forests hugely important centers
of nutrient recycling.

SECTION 3

WHAT IS A
RIPARIAN
ZONES?

A riparian zone is an area around a stream or another watercourse that
has distinctive vegetation and other characteristics that separate it
from the land beyond it. These zones contribute a number of important
things to the natural environment, with many conservation groups promote
the maintenance and restoration of them for the benefit of the environment
in their regions. Homeowners who live along riverbanks and streams are also
encouraged to establish healthy land around the water, which will look
attractive in addition to raising property values and benefiting the
environment.

SECTION 4

RIPARIAN
BUFFERS

Riparian buffers are strips of trees, shrubs, grasses and forbs along
waterways. Riparian buffers prevent pollution, provide habitat, and
can generate income.

With the right plants, you can profit from buffers. For example, you
could grow pollinator-friendly forbs and grasses, native seeds, berries,
hazelnuts and decorative woody florals.

Riparian buffers are strips or multiple-row plantings of trees, shrubs,
grasses and forbs along rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands.

What do riparian buffers do?

Riparian buffers are planted along water bodies to prevent pollutants from
agricultural runoff to enter the water as well as to enhance wildlife habitat
and to create potential income for the landowner from conservation easements
and income from harvesting the wood and various plants in the buffer.
